Nearly everyone did script correctly. Most problems are in write up. For problem 1, I expect you to point out the following: 1. Count to infinity problem, bouncing effect or packet traveling in a loop. 2. Packet dropped due to TTL limit (hop limit) reached. (Depending on traffic rate, packets can also be dropped because network is full, but you cannot ignore the first factor.) For problem 2, I expect you to point out the following: 1. Effects of TCP congestion control mechanisms, such as slow start and congestion avoidance. 2. Fairness problem. TCP traffic is responsive traffic, it will slow down if packet drop is detected. UDP traffic is not responsive, which means it will keep sending without considering network capacity. So when sharing paths with TCP, UDP can take too much bandwidth, especially if you increase traffic rate of UDP. For both problems, you can also observe some other events from nam, however they are not required (not graded). Nodes exchange routing information at the very beginning. (tiny dots/lines) For problem 1, packet drop triggered by TTL is always at node 2. Packet drop due to capacity can be at any node. For problem 1, split horizon is there (packet won't travel to node 3), but it doesn't work. -Xi Return-Path: cs551@bourbon.usc.edu Delivery-Date: Mon Oct 4 19:45:22 2004 Received: from bourbon.usc.edu (bourbon.usc.edu [128.125.9.75]) by merlot.usc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id i952jMja029226 for ; Mon, 4 Oct 2004 19:45:22 -0700 Received: from bourbon.usc.edu (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by bourbon.usc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id i952oxgv003732 for ; Mon, 4 Oct 2004 19:50:59 -0700 Received: (from cs551@localhost) by bourbon.usc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8/Submit) id i952oxNj003730 for cs551@merlot.usc.edu; Mon, 4 Oct 2004 19:50:59 -0700 Received: from msg-mx5.usc.edu (msg-mx5.usc.edu [128.125.137.10]) by bourbon.usc.edu (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id i952oxgv003718 for ; Mon, 4 Oct 2004 19:50:59 -0700 Received: from smtp801.mail.sc5.yahoo.com ([66.163.168.180]) by msg-mx5.usc.edu (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.02 (built Aug 25 2004)) with SMTP id <0I5300EP8BYL8B50@msg-mx5.usc.edu> for cs551@bourbon.usc.edu; Mon, 04 Oct 2004 19:51:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: from unknown (HELO ?64.164.170.159?)
