It's on the "selected project" page on the class web site. I have set up 14 machines. All machines are connected to the Internet, so you can work from home if you want. I have set the IP address of Machine X to be 204.57.1.(180+X). For example, Machine #9's IP address is 204.57.1.189. Machine #1 - #3 are shared machines. If you need a shared machine, you can use one of them. Machine #13 is on the same table as Machine #3, and Machine #14 is on the same table as Machine #6. I have disconnected the keyboard/video/mouse for Machines #3 and #6, because I needed the KVM for Machines #13 and #14. Feel free to move the machines around if you want to. I have set up a DHCP server on Machine #1. If you bring a laptop, you can connect your laptop to the hub on either rack, and just ask the DHCP server for an IP address (instead of setting up static IP as before). Please do not disconnect the orange cable in the hub on the rack that is closer to the window. For those of you who work on the DHCP client project, the configuration file of the DHCP server is "/etc/dhcpd.conf". For more information about the DHCP server, please check the man page ("man dhcpd"). The root password has been changed. I wrote the new password on the whiteboard, and you can ask me through email as well. I prefer not to send out the new root password through the mailing list because other people can read the archives. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Thanks! Machine #6 is taken offline, because it has been compromised! I received a message from ITS, saying a machine with our lab's IP address acted suspiciously. When I went to the lab yesterday, I realized that Machine #6 is connected to the Internet, and the root password does not work. Someone has probably changed the root password (possibly an attacker!). I hope none of you guys has done something nasty :) Let me suggest several things to prevent this from happening. 1) Please do not change any root password. If you have accidentally changed it, or when the root password does not work on any machine, please let me know ASAP. 2) Please use the lab machines for class exercises/projects only. Do not do anything weird (e.g., launching an attack, downloading stuff from peer-to-peer network): you WILL get caught. 3) If you are bringing a laptop, please make sure it has anti-virus software installed. 4) If you are using a lab machine to connect to the Internet, please turn on the firewall. I have turned the firewalls off, because they might mess up your exercises. All machines will be connected to the Internet for projects so that you can work from home (unless you prefer not to). And I am going to change the root password for all machines after Exercise 3's deadline. Please let me know if you have any concern or suggestion. Thanks! You don't need 3 console cables and 3 DB-9 connectors. There are only 2 console cables in each set, please do not take a console cable or DB-9 connector from another set. A few students are complaining that they can't find console cables and DB-9 connectors. 2) All the (Cisco) routers are in the same AS, so they either have to be in a full mesh (all routers are connected to each other physically), or you need to configure route reflector as in Exercise 1. You can configure either way. 3) Do *not* configure the attackers to run zebra or BGP. You can use a Linux command to configure a static route so the Linux boxes know where to send their attack packets to. This should be a network that the router is directly connected to. Also, make sure you use the "neighbor" command to tell the BGP router about *all* BGP neighbors it is directly connected to. As a sanity check in future exercises, after you have configured all BGP routers correctly, every entity (host or router) should be able to ping each other. If not, look at the routing tables and find out why. 2) Please follow the instructions carefully. If we ask you to output something, do this "on the spot", instead of finishing the whole exercise and go back to create the output using your final configuration. For example, in Exercise 1, you were asked to display the BGP routing table right after you had configured BGP, and before you had configured OSPF. You should output the BGP routing table without OSPF, and without the route the Router F propagates at the end of the exercise. 3) Please do not submit anything other than .pdf, .ps, .htm or .txt. I am not going to read anything else (e.g., .doc files) in future exercises. If any lab equipment is not working, please let me know ASAP. The network interfaces in the Linux boxes are pretty old, and I am not surprised at all if they fail. When you have connected the cables, configured the interfaces correctly, and the LED on the network interface card is on, but you can't ping anything, this might suggest the network interface is dead. If this happens, please let me know. I have installed some new network interfaces today, and now every machine in the lab has two network interfaces. Feel free to move the machines within the same set around, especially when the network interfaces on the Linux boxes are dead. 2. Please do *not* leave *anything* on the Linux boxes once you have left. This includes files in "/tftpboot", "/usr/local/etc", root's home directory, desktop, and anywhere in the Linux boxes. If another student uses your config or trace files you left on the machines, it's considered cheating and both of you are responsible! Before you leave, make sure you spend time cleaning up any file you created. 3. Please do not mess around with the flash memory on the Cisco routers. As some of you might notice, the Cisco 4000 router on Rack 2 was not working in the last couple days. I found out that someone might have (accidentally) erased everything in the flash memory, including Cisco IOS! If you are stuck and want to start from scratch, just reboot the router (using "reload"). Then you should configure OSPF, and display the routing table and BGP routing table of A - E once you are done.
